So, first of all, what is spermicide?

Spermicide comes in a variety of forms, including foams, creams and jellies. It is inserted into the vagina to prevent sperm from fertilizing eggs.

How does it work?

Spermicide paralyzes sperm so it can’t enter the uterus. Since there are several forms of spermicide, be sure to read instructions to ensure proper use.

How effective is it?

Spermicide is not an effective form of birth control on its own. In fact, it fails 29% of the time. Spermicide is best used as extra pregnancy protection with another form of birth control like condoms or cervical caps. Spermicide does NOT prevent STDs.

Where can I find it?

Spermicide can be purchased at pharmacies, supermarkets and online.

Does it have any side effects?

Some people are allergic to spermicide, so if you notice any irritation when you use it, you should see a doctor.

How do I use it?

Each type of spermicide has different instructions, so be sure to read the directions on the box or package. That said, it’s important that – if you do use spermicide as your primary birth control method – that you use it every time you have sex.
